UK–Türkiye Flights and UK261 Rights
UK261 can apply very differently depending on which direction you travel between the UK and Türkiye. A flight from the UK to Türkiye can be covered even when it is operated by a Turkish airline such as AJet, while a flight from Türkiye to the UK needs a different legal check. This guide explains the route rules, AJet examples, connections, disruption rights, compensation, and the other passenger-rights frameworks that may matter.

Does UK261 apply to flights between the UK and Türkiye?
Sometimes — and the direction of travel is crucial. Under current UK passenger-rights rules, a flight that departs from a UK airport can fall under UK261 regardless of the airline's nationality. That means a UK-to-Türkiye flight operated by AJet, Turkish Airlines, Pegasus or another non-UK carrier can still be within UK261's geographic scope.
A flight travelling in the opposite direction is different. A flight arriving in the UK is generally within UK261 only when it is operated by a UK or EU airline. A Türkiye-to-UK flight operated by a Turkish airline therefore should not automatically be treated as a UK261 flight. Turkish passenger-rights rules or another applicable framework may instead need to be checked.
For the broader UK framework, see our UK261 Compensation guide. This page focuses specifically on the UK–Türkiye route question.
UK to Türkiye: when UK261 can apply
If your journey starts at an airport in the United Kingdom, UK261 can apply even when the flight is operated by an airline based outside the UK or EU. The operating airline still matters for the claim itself, but the airline does not have to be British for a UK departure to be within the geographic scope of UK261.
London → Istanbul on AJet
AJet currently sells London Stansted–Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen services. Because the journey departs from the UK, UK261 can be relevant if a qualifying disruption occurs.
London → Ankara or another Türkiye destination
The same UK-departure principle applies. The next questions are the disruption type, arrival delay, cancellation notice, cause, and other eligibility details.
UK261 coverage does not mean compensation is automatic. A covered flight must still meet the relevant conditions for a delay, cancellation, denied boarding or other protected disruption, and compensation can be excluded when extraordinary circumstances apply.
Türkiye to the UK: why the rule changes
For flights arriving in the UK, the UK Civil Aviation Authority states that UK261 coverage generally requires the flight to be operated by a UK or EU airline. This is why the return direction cannot simply be treated as the mirror image of a UK-to-Türkiye flight.
Istanbul → London on AJet
AJet is a Türkiye-based airline. A direct AJet flight from Türkiye to the UK therefore does not fit the standard UK261 inbound-airline rule in the same way that a UK or EU carrier would.
Türkiye → UK on a UK or EU airline
UK261 may be relevant when the operating carrier meets the UK/EU airline requirement. The exact flight, route and operating carrier should be checked rather than relying only on the brand shown on the ticket.
Turkish passenger-rights rules may also be relevant to flights involving Türkiye. See our Türkiye Flight Compensation guide for the broader Turkish framework.
AJet flights and UK261: the most important distinction
AJet is particularly relevant to UK–Türkiye passengers because it currently markets flights between London Stansted and Türkiye, including Istanbul and other Turkish destinations. For AJet passengers, the direction of travel is often the first jurisdiction question to answer.
| Example | UK261 starting point | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| London → Istanbul on AJet | UK261 can apply because the flight departs from the UK. | Delay at final arrival, cancellation notice, denied boarding, disruption cause and operating carrier. |
| London → Ankara on AJet | UK261 can apply because the flight departs from the UK. | The same disruption-specific eligibility checks still apply. |
| Istanbul → London on AJet | Do not assume UK261 applies. The standard inbound UK rule requires a UK or EU operating airline. | Check Turkish passenger-rights rules and the exact itinerary. |
| Türkiye → London with a codeshare | The marketing airline alone is not enough. | Identify the airline that actually operates the flight. |
The operating airline matters more than the logo on your booking
Passenger-rights coverage can depend on the operating carrier — the airline actually performing the flight. This matters for codeshares and itineraries sold by one airline but operated by another.
AJet's own conditions of carriage distinguish the ticketing/marketing arrangement from the operating carrier on codeshare flights. For a UK261 assessment, do not assume that the airline name shown most prominently on the booking automatically determines the legal position.
- Check the wording beside “operated by” on your booking confirmation.
- Keep the flight number and the operating airline name.
- Save any airline message showing a last-minute operating-carrier change.
- For a codeshare, keep both the marketing flight number and operating flight number if available.
Connecting UK–Türkiye journeys: one booking vs self-transfer
Connecting journeys require more care than a direct flight. If all flight segments are part of one booking, the final destination and total arrival delay can be important when assessing a missed connection. A self-transfer built from separate tickets is not automatically treated as one protected journey.
One booking
If the itinerary is issued as one connected booking, a disruption on an earlier segment may affect the assessment at the final destination.
Separate tickets / self-transfer
Separate bookings usually need to be assessed independently. Missing a second separately booked flight does not automatically make the first airline responsible for the entire journey.

UK261, EU261 or Turkish passenger rights: which rules may matter?
UK–Türkiye travel can involve more than one passenger-rights framework. The correct framework should be identified from the actual journey rather than chosen simply because one regime offers a familiar compensation amount.
UK261
The main UK passenger-rights framework for covered delays, cancellations and denied boarding. UK departures are especially important for UK–Türkiye travel.
Turkish passenger rights
Türkiye's SHY-PASSENGER framework addresses passenger rights for issues including denied boarding, delays and cancellations and can be relevant to Türkiye-linked journeys.
EU261
EU261 can become relevant on itineraries involving EU airports or EU operating airlines, depending on the route. A direct UK–Türkiye flight should not simply be assumed to be an EU261 case.

What rights can matter after a disrupted UK–Türkiye flight?
The route tells you whether a legal framework may apply; the disruption then determines which rights need to be checked. Compensation is only one part of the picture.
Flight delay
Under UK261, compensation can be relevant when a covered passenger reaches the destination more than three hours late and the airline is responsible. Care rights can arise earlier depending on flight distance and waiting time.
Cancellation
Refund or rerouting rights can apply separately from fixed compensation. Compensation depends on factors including notice, replacement-flight timing and the reason for cancellation.
Denied boarding
Involuntary denied boarding can trigger passenger rights when you had a valid booking, complied with check-in requirements and did not volunteer to give up your seat.
Missed connection
The booking structure, protected connection and final arrival delay can determine whether a missed connection is compensable.
If you are still at the airport, visit the Airdelay Help Center for practical guidance on what to do after a delay, cancellation or other flight disruption.
UK261 compensation amounts for covered flights
When UK261 applies and the compensation conditions are met, the statutory amount depends primarily on flight distance and, for some long-haul delay cases, the length of the arrival delay. Rerouting can also affect the amount in some cancellation cases.
For the broader explanation of statutory amounts, see Flight Compensation Amounts.
What should you keep after a UK–Türkiye flight disruption?
Good evidence makes it easier to identify the route, operating carrier, disruption and final arrival time. You do not necessarily need every document before starting a claim, but the following items can be useful.
- Booking confirmation, e-ticket or itinerary receipt
- Booking reference / PNR
- Flight number and travel date
- Departure, connection and destination airports
- Boarding pass, if available
- The name of the operating airline, especially on a codeshare
- Delay or cancellation emails, SMS messages and app notifications
- Replacement-flight or rerouting details
- Actual final arrival time
- Written reason for the disruption, if the airline provides one
- Itemised receipts for reasonable meals, accommodation and transport when relevant

UK–Türkiye journey examples
These examples show how the first jurisdiction question changes with the route. They are simplified illustrations rather than automatic eligibility decisions.
AJet London → Istanbul delayed
Because the flight departs from the UK, UK261 can apply. The next checks include final arrival delay, disruption reason and whether the airline is responsible.
AJet Istanbul → London delayed
Do not automatically treat this as UK261. AJet is Türkiye-based, so the UK inbound-airline rule changes the analysis. Turkish passenger-rights rules may be relevant.
London → Türkiye cancelled on any airline
A UK departure can bring the flight into UK261's geographic scope. Compensation still depends on cancellation notice, rerouting and the reason for cancellation.
Türkiye → UK on a UK or EU airline
UK261 may be relevant because the inbound operating carrier can satisfy the UK/EU airline requirement. The specific itinerary still needs to be checked.
UK → Türkiye with an EU connection
A connecting itinerary may involve UK261 and potentially other rules depending on the booking, airports and operating carriers. Avoid treating each segment in isolation before checking the complete itinerary.
Separate self-transfer tickets
If you bought separate tickets, a missed onward flight may not be protected in the same way as a connection sold as one booking. Each ticket may need its own assessment.
